Refresh your routine
Spring is finally here! After a long Chicago winter, we couldn’t be more thrilled to see buds on the trees and flowers just starting to peek out from the ground. With the changing of the seasons comes an urge to refresh your routine—and switching up your skincare regimen is necessary for looking and feeling your best during the upcoming warmer weather. We’ve gathered a handful of our best skincare tips for spring, so read on!
Shed some layers
We often find ourselves battling the elements during the winter, which can really take a toll on the skin. You can avoid sleet and snow indoors, but it’s hard to avoid heating, which can leave skin dry and dehydrated. The result? A complexion that’s dull from environmental build-up and dead skin cells (we know, it’s gross.) This is where an exfoliant comes in—it will gently buff away dull skin and boost cell turnover, revealing a radiant complexion. For sensitive skin, go with a manual exfoliant, which is gentler; those with resilient skin can opt for a chemical exfoliant, which gets quick results. Remember to exfoliate once a week to keep that spring glow going!
Winter weather can be harsh, extremely cold, and dry, leading us to reach for ultra-rich creams to protect our skin. As the temperature warms up, most of us no longer need those heavy formulas to keep our skin happy. In fact, continuing to use products that are too rich could clog pores or cause on oil imbalance, leading to blemishes and congested skin. Thankfully, there are plenty of lightweight lotions that sink right in and offer just the right amount of moisture without overdoing it. Go for one geared towards your skin type to get the best results. You may also want to swap your night cream for a silky serum or skip it altogether if you have combo/oily skin.
Believe it or not, sunburns are fairly common in spring. Because the weather is so mild, people don’t realize how strong the sun is and forget to wear sunscreen. And, yes, UV rays can still do their damage on cloudy days, so you need to be vigilant even when it’s overcast outside. Choose a sunscreen that offers full UVA/UVB protection as well as skincare benefits, so you get the most out of wearing it every day. It’s also important to find a formula with a texture you like so you’re more inclined to use it. Those with combo/oily skin often avoid sunscreen because it feels too heavy, but there are formulas that absorb quickly and won’t leave any residue on the skin. So, once you find a sunscreen that you love, stick to it—and reapply!
Be honest, how long has that jar of moisturizer been sitting at the back of your cabinet? If you’re a skincare fanatic (or less than diligent with your routine), you may end up with products that expire before you can use them up. Now’s the time to ditch those items that are past their prime. Expired products lose their efficacy and can even harbor bacteria and mold that (needless to say) are not good for your skin. Lip and eye products should be discarded after a year; for other items, check the packaging for dates and if you’re in doubt, toss it out. If you wear makeup, go through your cosmetics bag; discard anything that’s been around a little too long and wash your makeup brushes.
