A recent study of the Tsimane (pronounced chee-MAH-nay) showed they have the healthiest arteries ever studied. An 80-year-old Tsimane has the heart of a 50-year-old American. An indigenous tribe living in the Bolivian Amazon, they subsist on food they’re able to hunt and gather. What’s the magic behind these youthful tickers? Researchers identified key aspects of their lifestyle that differ from the typical Westerner:
- Men spend 6-7 hours a day being active, women 4-6
- Their diet is mostly unprocessed plant-based foods
- When they eat meat, it’s typically wild game
- Smoking is very rare
It will not come as a shock that lots of exercise, lots of vegetables, and not smoking are good for your heart. Still, it’s interesting to know just how far a healthy lifestyle can take us. Having the heart of a person decades younger is something we can all aspire to. Although this study doesn’t absolutely prove that their lifestyle is the cause of their healthy arteries, it’s hard to think otherwise.
