Mask acne or “maskne” is probably your most recent skin care complaint. Consistent mask wearing has caused many of us to have new or worsening breakouts and irritation, especially around the nose and mouth.
It’s important to continue to wear a mask to protect yourself and others during the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean that the acne is here to stay. We’ve put together a simple night time skin care routine, along with a few balancing day time tips, that will keep your skin clean and help keep mask acne at bay.
Step 1: Double Cleanse
Your night time skin care routine should start with a thorough double cleanse. Double cleansing is when you wash your face twice. First with an oil-based cleanser followed by a gel or water-based cleanser. This helps to deeply remove dirt, excess oil, impurities and pollution from the skin.
Our favorite oil cleanser of the moment is the (MALIN + GOETZ) Facial Cleansing Oil ($42). It will really break down and melt away debris and makeup. Follow that up with the Eau Thermale Avene Cleanance Soap-Free Cleansing Gel ($20). This is specifically formulated for combination skin and targets blemishes. It’s detergent-free so it doesn’t dry or irritate the skin further.
Working in combination, these two cleansers will treat existing mask acne, while preventing any new breakouts from developing overnight.
Step 2: Tone
Next, use a toner to balance the pH of the skin, keep the pores tight and the skin refined. A healthy dousing of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Facial Toner ($37) or Clarifying Toner ($37) will help to rebalance if the skin is feeling congested. This can be spritzed on through the day to refresh your skin.
Additionally, it makes for a great morning mist in lieu of a morning cleanse. If you want to avoid stripping the skin and want to cleanse only once a day, start your morning with one of these toners for a gentle morning treatment.
Step 3: Treat
Spot treat blemishes before bed with a natural antibacterial solution like colloidal silver. We love Uncle Harry’s Natural Products Colloidal Silver Blemish Roll-On ($10). Colloidal silver has naturally antibacterial and healing properties. It’s not irritating like some blemish treatments can be so you can reapply this to any mask acne spots that pop up throughout the day.
Adding a clay mask to your routine a few nights a week can work wonders on congested pores. Clay is one of the best things for really detoxing the skin as it acts as a vacuum for the pores while refining the skin’s texture. Try the evanhealy Green Tea Clay ($19.95). It’s great for oily or acne-prone skin. You should see results after using it once or twice a week for 10-15 minutes.
Step 4: Moisturize
The idea that adding oil to skin causes more breakouts is a common myth. It’s actually one of the best ways to moisturize and treat acne-prone skin. One of the best products for nourishing all skin types, especially combination, textured or photodamaged is Chidoriya’s Rosehip Seed Oil ($33.60).
This lightweight, non-comedogenic oil is rich in fatty acids and Vitamin A which is wonderful for gently exfoliating the skin over time, treating pore size, smoothing fine lines, diminishing sun spots and reducing the appearance of acne scars.
Oil serums are best applied over freshly toned, damp skin using pressing motions. They will not feel greasy if you use them in this way. Any redness or irritation from mask wearing will fade away with regular use of this oil as well.
